I carry two cultures, two languages, two worlds.
I belong to both, I belong to neither.
I am Persephone, destined forever to journey between them”.

2019 Project: Persephone’s Plight - Persephone Series

Since first visiting Greece as a young girl, Vicky has identified the myth of Demeter and Persephone as a metaphor for the migrant experience.

It has underpinned her work as artist over the last 30 years. Her film and multi-media works made up of the moving image and written word have been screened and exhibited internationally. These include the documentary Visible Passage, the multi-media exhibition Persephone’s Plight – The Four Seasons of Migration, the feature film script Kore and assorted essays and poems.

In 2019 she is developing the Persephone Series – Persephone Returns which will meld and integrate live performance elements with moving image projections.

Persephone’s Plight – The Four Seasons of Migration

This multi-media installation exhibition was mounted for Moving Image Centre in Auckland, New Zealand in 2010. In 2012 it was invited to the Kefalonia International Arts Festival, in Greece. It’s thematic motif of Birth, Separation, Yearning and Return continue to emerge in her work, as an archetypal template.

In 2019 Vicky will be returning to Greece for six months to take up residency at ICAC to develop further works for the Persephone Series.

A migrant carries within them two worlds, and they live within the friction and unease of many contradictions. They try to reconcile them. They look for lumber.

When they find their lumber, they build a bridge.
I build mine by telling stories through the creative arts.”
